Tokyo 2

I want to post and write so much about my days Tokyo - this beautiful city. I have so many impressions from this trip, but don't know where to start or how to explain some of them.

It sounds cliché but not speaking Japanese I had a few moments in which I could totally feel some of the scenes in Sophia Coppola's 'Lost in Transaltion'. Voices which come out of speakers in shops, trains or elevators which you can't understand or street signs or menus you can't read. You get a lot more conscious of things but don't really feel part of situations and so I felt sometimes as if I am in a bubble watching people there in their life and what they do.

I didn't really have much time to prepare this trip apart of reading some blogs I got the Hello Sandwhich Tokyo guide which gives great ideas of where to go. Without big expectations I was ready to explore, to walk through the streets of Tokyo, hear different noises, smell and eat new food...
I got the feeling that not many people speak English there but I always thought that everyone I asked for the way - or better I was showing my map pointing at my destination - was so friendly and willing to help. I even once left my subway map back at a lunch place and after walking further, being streets away from the restaurant the waitress was suddenly running behind us to give it back to me (!) - a subway map.

On the second day I made my way to Omote-sando and the infamous Shibuya with its massive intersection and many shops. I was strolling through the back streets of Omote-sando and there was so much to see..I sometimes stopped, and turned around or looked up to make sure I am not missing anything. There are many small (vintage) shops, surprisingly many hairdressers and small places to eat in these backstreets/laneways.
Shibuya was just big and a bit too crowded for me. I went to one of the traffic lights to get ready to cross the massive intersection and it somehow felt special, passing the street with so many people. Tokyo is a shopping paradise. You can get pretty much everything you want, you only need to find it. I went to 'Loft' and 'Tokyo Hands' two massive departments stores in which you can get pretty much everything you can think of, I went because I have heard of their stationary floors and boy they have great stationary there. I stocked up on some great things. But I was also dragged into bookshops where I could look through foreign magazines, books or zines...I could have spent hours there.

Let me tell you how often I got lost in Tokyo, which wasn't really bad as it can be fun getting lost to explore new things but when you are actually looking for something particular you really would like to go to it can be frustrating. On my second night for instance I wanted to go to a cafe which I got recommended in one of the Shibuya's backstreets but I couldn't find it.

to be continued - maybe even in analog form :)

On my way back from Germany to Sydney I had the chance to stop over in Tokyo for a couple of days to work from there and also explore the city which I wanted visit for a long time and about which I have heard so many great things.
I had the afternoons and the weekend to explore this amazing place and could still fill weeks to see more lovely corners, places and shops and most of all eat the great food.
The weather was quiet cold but I was lucky and always had a sunny and blue sky above me. Prepared with layers of warm clothes, mittens, woolen scarf, hat and two cameras was I exploring a few of the many suburbs here in Tokyo.
---------
After I landed on Wednesday I went straight to work and was blown away by the view I had from the 28th floor in the office. I just couldn't see an end of the city.
I was pretty tired from my flight so all I managed to do after this day was to get a great bowl of ramen soup at a place I got recommended by a local, it was soo simple but delicious - real soul food.

I will soon show you more images and also hope I get my analog photos quickly developed as soon as I will be back in Sydney. (Sad thing was that the good old pentax was acting a bit weirdly fingers crossed that the images turn out ok - especially from today which was the nicest day I had here in Tokyo especially because I spend it with the wonderful Hiki who showed me her favorite places here in Tokyo.

To be continued :)

A new year - be calm

Happy new year
Happy new year

Life is so fast lately. I am still reflecting over the last year and how much has happened I even haven't gotten a new calendar yet (which might also be a sign that I am still a bit stuck in the old year). Well, I might do a little look-back post soon, but for now I would like to wish you all a wonderful start into the new year.

I am in transit at the moment and on my way to Tokyo to spend the next week there.

Let me know if there is anything I should not miss out to do

Merry Christmas to you all.

It is very grey here in Germany and and not as snowy as it was last time I spent Christmas here. I have a great time - meeting people, reading, drinking tea and eating my way through the Christmas cookies at my grandmother's place..

Thank you so much for your lovely birthday wishes.

I hope you have a wonderful time...

29

I am just about to go to bed, tired after a beautiful day with so many people who thought of me, called, wrote me lines, sent a card .... friends who came over, chats over coffee, tea and cake, laughs. It's been a great day.
I made Nigel Slater's beetroot cake this morning and I wanted to take a picture but forgot and now it is all gone but it was so great, a perfect Winter cake....

It is great to be back home..

Fremantle Western Australia

Fremantle
Morning Swim / Fremantle
snack - toasted fruit bread w/ butter and pears
Western Australia / Fremantle
Fremantle / Grumpy Sailor Cafe

I am here in Fremantle since last Tuesday. It is our Summer stop before we fly over to Germany on Tuesday. I was lucky and could work from here and enjoy the beautiful warm weather which everyone was missing in Sydney over the last couple of weeks. I went for a swim in my lunch break which was early in the morning here due to the 3 hours time difference to Sydney, had the most delicious fruitbreat I ever had as snacks and great great coffee at a friends place who just opened up a cafe in a bookstore called Grumpy Sailor .

On Friday night we went to a beautiful solo concert from Sean Pollard from the split seconds at the Fremantle Arts center. What a beautiful night it was. I hope I can share soon the link with you. Radio National recorded and broadcasted it live.

>> Two good sites which show a lot about great places in Perth and Fremantle

Have a great day,

You know when you move into a new place it is a bit like having a white piece of paper in front of you. You can arrange your space totally new add bits here and there, pin up different things to the wall and make it your home. I moved into a small room in a shared house last Sunday (only for a couple of months) and I am still in the process of making it my new home.

It is a nice room gets great light, which was very important to me and has trees in front of it. At the moment I am getting used to this new place, its noises and sounds, such as cracking floor boards or light reflections on the wall when its getting dark.
On Saturday morning I woke up and thought I could smell coffee from the little cafe across the road, I was hearing the sound of cups on tables and chats from the distance. It was a very nice sound ....

I am off to Perth tomorrow and will fly home to Germany on Sunday.
Can't wait.
